PPAP Level 3
The default PPAP submission level, the full evidence package with dimensional results, material certs, capability studies and control plans sent for approval.
When a purchase order says PPAP required and nothing else, Level 3 is what the customer usually means, and the quoting argument is about whether the price noticed. Level 1 is a warrant and little else. Level 3 sends the evidence itself, dimensional results on every print characteristic, material certifications, process flow, control plan, measurement system analysis and capability studies on the designated characteristics, which means real hours from quality, real time on the CMM, and a sample run the schedule has to absorb.
The estimating mistake is treating the level as paperwork intensity rather than cost intensity. Between Level 1 and Level 3 sits a package that can consume days of skilled time, and it lands before the program pays its first invoice. On heavy volume the amortisation forgives it, which is how the worked valve on this site carries its whole QA and approval burden at $0.019 a piece. Shrink the program and the same obligation becomes visible money, so the level belongs in the quote review, read from the quality clauses, never assumed.
The second argument Level 3 settles is scope. Capability studies attach to designated characteristics, and how many the print flags decides the study burden. A drawing carrying 12 designated characteristics against an otherwise identical drawing carrying 2 is a different quote, and the difference is invisible to anyone pricing from geometry alone, which is one more reason the line-by-line discipline in how to quote a machined part reads the quality documents before the price goes out.
Mid-argument, the useful question is which level and which characteristics, asked before award. Asked after, the answer is the same and the cost is yours.
